A day after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as party chief through a Supreme Court order, PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq on Thursday called on the chief election commissioner to re-issue tickets to the party’s Senate candidates, DawnNews reported.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had declared Sharif’s leadership and all official party decisions he took following the Panama Papers null and void. It had subsequently ordered the ECP to remove Nawaz Sharif as president of the PML-N, further ruling that “all steps taken, orders passed, directions given and documents issued” by Sharif since his disqualification last year will be deemed to have been nullified.
The Supreme Court had deemed that a person disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution is not eligible to sign off on any document needed to nominate a person to the National Assembly or Senate.
On Thursday, Haq, accompanied by Anosha Rahman and Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, told reporters outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that as chairman of the party he, too, had the authority to issue party tickets.
He said that he had submitted the authority letter and other relevant documents to the ECP.
Talking about the party’s new leader, he said that a consultation process had been initiated to appoint an acting president.
The PML-N’s central working party will appoint a new president next week, he added.
