No more refreshments during NA standing committee meetings

The National Assembly’s standing committee on the parliamentary affairs will not enjoy refreshments, including tea, during formal meetings anymore.

Members of the standing committee seemed concerned over the suspension of the facility. The PPP women protested over the development.

The role of the parliamentary affairs ministry is reduced to that of a postman, said Shagufta Jumani, a PPP member of the committee on Friday.

“On the one hand, the ministry’s budget is being withheld. On the other hand, provision of tea to the members has been stopped,” the MNA said. “We know that the order came from the Prime Minister.”

She said it felt like Ramazan before the month had actually arrived as the members of the committee were not given water bottles. We will have to bring our own bottles to the meeting, she said.

“A poor person, who is denied justice, pins all his hopes on the premier that he [PM] will solve his problems,” said the MNA. In contrast, the premiers in previous democratic eras used to solve the people’s problems as and when an applicant approached them, she said.

She said, “I feel sorry for the poor who have no one to console and listen to them in the Naya Pakistan. The government has ceased Zakat, Baitul Maal and other assistance  for example in healthcare.”

Another PPP MNA Shamsun Nisa said at least water should be allowed during the committee’s meetings.

The government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan introduced cost cutting measures to save public money in consideration of financial constraints facing the country. A notification to this effect was issued last month. The federal government announced certain austerity measures as part of cost cutting efforts.
