The government of Khyber Pakhtunkwa has decided to install closed-circuit television cameras across Peshawar to identify people throwing litter. Those who are caught, will be fined on the spot.

The Water and Sanitation Services Company, Peshawar has designated several places as garbage points around the provincial capital. The independent corporate utility company has imposed a ban on throwing litter and waste material out of houses.

“We have identified five points in the city where the CCTV cameras will be installed,” WSSP Chief Executive Officer Syed Zafar Ali Shah said on Thursday. “We will launch a strict monitoring system with the help of surveillance cameras. Our men will be appointed on all these points.”

The WSSP chief said citizens violating the ban will be fined, ranging from Rs5,000 to Rs 20,000.

People are appreciating the recent government measure to keep the city clean. “Whomever dumps garbage outside their houses should be punished on the spot,” an elderly man said. One of the citizens went to the extent of suggesting jail time for people who litter the city.

In 2014, the provincial government established WSSP under the local governments to provide water and sanitation services at sustainable levels to meet civic needs. The WSSP is functioning in 43 union councils of the city.
